Raising the age of consent is a veiled attempt to assert conservative moral values on youth, queer and youth-led groups told Senators today.
The Senate’s legal affairs committee is studying a Harper government bill that would raise the age of consent from 14 to 16. It will almost certainly pass — no political party has opposed it — but queer and youth-led groups came out Feb 22 to insist on their sexual freedom. The proposed changes will have a disproportionate impact on gays, said Richard Hudler of the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario.
"My first lover was 17 years older than me. And this is common [among gay people]," he said. "It is dangerous — considering the attitude toward sexual orientation in schools — for a young person to attempt to make sexual contact with a peer."

I’m also from Québec, Canada. I don’t think it will pass. 14 is OK. A boy or a girl of that age knows what he/she is doing.

Actually having sex before 16 y/o almost always has a traumatizing effect on the person … the still developing brain isn’t developed in most cases to handle it.
Ask any psychiatrist or addiction specialist that treats people for compulsive/addictive behavior. They see this sort of thing day in and day out and it takes years a therapy to correct.
Anyone who has sex with a 14 y/o is nothing short of predatory.

cg,
While I understand what you are saying, and I do see what you are referring to, directly, as I work in psych, I also believe that this is somthing that cannot be generalized. There are 14 year olds who have sex and it does not harm them, they may or may not be different growing up because of this, but who is to say in a bad or good way. It depends on a mixture of the person’s gentics and environment, their personality, etc, whether or not sex with a peer or someone older at a young age is going to be bad.
anyway, that’s my two cents

@3 cg:
If you only ask psychiatrists you only get the problematic cases.
it is like asking in an italian restaurant who likes italian food. bad idea to do statistics.

@#Kai
Max does have a point … but the percentage unaffected is very low though … why i said most and not all … as far as Kai’s point most ARE problematic cases period whether they are treated by a doctor or not … most cases go untreated and almost always cause problems in forming healthy relationships.
The way the brain works is things that are traumatizing as a kid actually become attractive later on in our sexual development … that’s why so many kids that are molested grow up to be molesters or are attracted to bad people who just take advantage of them and are victimized over and over if they don’t get treatment to get there “attraction compass” fixed.
It’s a serious problem that shouldn’t be dismissed with a spaghetti metaphor.

” The success of tyrants is determined through their ability to divest the greatest amount of people of their personal rights and freedoms with the least amount of protest.” This bill would make Stephen Harper a tyrant if it is made law. I have always engaged in sexual relations with youth as young as 14 years old and have every intention of continuing to do so. This law will be challenged and thrown out of Canada as the violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that it is. Fear of human sexuality and expression is the worse type of sexual perversion.

Fourteen year olds know what they are doing, and they know what they want.
So do 13 year olds, for that matter.
When I was 12, I had sex with another 12 year old, and no one was hurt at all.
Leave it at 14.
