XXY is a tastefully discreet, deeply moving drama that addresses the awkward dilemma of an "intersex" teenager with remarkable sensitivity. ("Intersex" being the preferred term for those born with shared sex chromosomes and what doctors call "genital ambiguity.") For 15-year-old Alex having an intersex body is a constant source of anguished confusion. Alex has been raised as a girl by loving parents, who moved from Argentina to an island off the coast of Uruguay to spare Alex from adolescent torment by insensitive schoolmates. But now Alex has stopped taking the hormone pills that suppress male characteristics, suggesting a pivotal life choice has been made. When Alex’s mother invites a plastic surgeon and his family to the island, she quietly hopes Alex will consider "reassignment" surgery, while her husband allows Alex more freedom of choice. When Alex and the surgeon’s teenage son Alvaro act upon a tentative, mutual attraction, XXY deepens into a poignant study of sexual identity and self-acceptance.

Making her remarkably assured directorial debut, Argentine writer-director Lucía Puenzo has fully accounted for the turbulent emotions that swirl around Alex and her family. "XXY" is the first film to address intersex identity with graceful compassion, and Puenzo tells Alex’s story with simple, honest and forthright integrity.

What ensues between them, both psychologically and sexually, is one of the strangest, most fascinating dysfunctional relationships I’ve seen in a movie. The acting is outstanding. – Boston Globe

Genital ambiguity is more broad than chromosome disorders, and not every person with ambiguous genitalia is a “true hermaphrodite.” For some, ambiguous genitalia just means that your penis is “too small” or that your clitoris is “too big.” And unluckily for some, if your penis is “too small,” the doctor and your parents may just decide for you that you want your penis hacked off and turned into a vagina. I am not sure what they do if your clit is too big. I hear though that doctors are now slightly less likely to recommend forced genital “correction” to parents than they were before.

xxy is a pretty good movie, but it isn’t as coherent as we probably want it to be. There are some really great elements involving relationships between those with XXY and their parents as well with the people they may be interested in. However, I’m not so sure I’d watch it again unlike say… Let the Right On In.

Also side note: Thanks MilkBoys for the link add a while back. Shotalicious’ page views have been soaring over the last month or so and I’m sure you are part of the reason why. i LESS THAN THREE you!

I just find the title confusing, XXY or 47.XXY is another name for Klinefelter’s syndrome, a condition that affects millions of men, but most don’t even know it. just like XXY implies they have an extra X cromosome, but are not intergender, typically they are very tall and lanky and sometimes infertile, but only in the most extreme cases do they ever exibit any female sex charastics. Abraham Lincoln was believed to have Klienfelter’s Syndrome.

XXY is an Argentinian movie (I’m form Argentina) and it was very controversial in here, but well received as well… I didn’t like so much, but I don’t like Argentinian cinema in general xDDD

Thanks, Josh, I was wondering about this movie, and will probably watch it now.
I did see Let The Right One In, and it was odd, quirky, and choppy at times, but overall was pretty intriguing and the characters well-portrayed. Good movie, I thought.
    Thanks again.

Too bad you’re outside Netflix area, Themax! I’ll regret this great service when I move back to France next month.
It’s a sweet movie allright, not pretentious. The scene with the “girl” taking the boy from behind is kinky…
