That’s a good reminder that the dark middle ages are still not quite over yet. Religion at its best.

But nimatek, MrChives thinks there are laws to protect him from this kind of thing. He is celebrating the freedom he has as a fag at his Catholic college in Amerika. He claims there is no need for any nasty revolution to spoil his fun.
MrChives has an answer for everything. Don’t all the Amerikans though? They really believe in their failed empire. They embrace their own torture.
The age of hair-shirts is not over and for his penance MrChives can kiss my ass. Spread the cheeks and kiss it! And that MrChives is not ad hominem, my dear. It is de facto Anilingus. Capiche?

Great read. Even though the article is almost 4 years old it brings up some great points (like below). I know things are not perfect and that these ex-Gay organizations are getting stronger, but as it was stated in the article, there is finally a generation of kids that get it and accept everyone.
Page 10:
…Because he routinely sees young gays on MTV or even at school, a 14-year-old may now feel comfortable telling friends that he likes other boys, but that doesn’t mean he is ready to enfold himself in a gay identity. “Today so many kids who are gay, they don’t like Cher. They aren’t part of the whole subculture,” says Michael Glatze, 30, editor in chief of YGA Magazine. “They feel like they belong in their faith, in their families.”
“Increasingly, these kids are like straight kids,” says Savin-Williams. “Straight kids don’t define themselves by sexuality, even though sexuality is a huge part of who they are. Of course they want to have sex, but they don’t say, ‘It is what I am.’” He believes young gays are moving toward a “postgay” identity. “Just because they’re gay, they don’t have to march in a parade. Part of it is political. Part is personal, developmental.”

“Increasingly, these kids are like straight kids,” says Savin-Williams. “Straight kids don’t define themselves by sexuality, even though sexuality is a huge part of who they are. Of course they want to have sex, but they don’t say, ‘It is what I am.’”
This is true, or at least it is becoming true, but my own feeling is that it has little to do with being gay or straight and a great deal more to do with the change of economic climate since the second world war and the “emancipation” of women. Straight kids now don’t define themselves by their sexuality as much as they used to, but that is because the old divisions of gender have been eroded by the social and economic influences that now require both partners to work to have a standard of living that aspires to the models advertised by corporate interests. Being male or female matters a lot less now, and so it is not surprising to see that trends in the tolerance of minority sexualities have changed.
In parts of the world where the male is still the dominant figure, holds the power and dispenses the justice, women and gays are still oppressed whether it be under the mullahs of Iran or the pastors of the more extreme baptist ministries. A quick look at the history of central Europe during the 1920’s and 30’s will show you how devastatingly quickly the good fortune of some groups can change in response to financial depression and upset.
So 40 years on from Stonewall the gay youth of today has a better – a much better prospect than those of forty years ago and I hope that some sort of critical mass has been reached whereby the freedoms, rights and acceptance that they have become so endemic in society at large that they become irreversable. I also hope that they will never become complacent about the gains that have been made and that they will not forget the men and women who put themselves on the line to ensure that they got those rights and freedoms when society was in a state to offer them. Rights, like people in jobs, can all too often fall victim to “last in – first out” policies.

Good post Josh.
I agree that these kids don’t want to (and should not have to) define their lives around being gay. But that can only occur when society doesn’t care so much about sexuality. I like what that Mormon father said: these are good boys. That’s what you ultimately need to define your life around.
I continue to believe that religion is the central problem here. They advertise a faith-based set of morals that is contrary to the tolerance of sexuality. That moral judgment laid onto these kids by their parents is an incredibly strong emotional force. That in turn forces children to make a choice: fit in and be a normal part of a family, a normal part of the community; or be gay and different.
That’s a tough choice to lay on a thirteen year old, who’s just trying to figure out who he is.

Did you actually read the article, Pope? Its progressive, its optimistic; it makes it very clear that this social crisis is dissolving of its volition. If you want to shed blood for ‘the cause’, I would be the last person on earth to stop you. But I also won’t mourn it, because its unnecessary. You’re revolution won’t help, because you’re thirty years too late.
Even the outrageous story of Mr. Olsen is eight years old (For comparison, only two or three years after Matthew Shepard). And what makes it so outrageous, even to straight people, is that its an anomaly. Its so contrary to the overwhelming general trend of acceptance that its almost inconceivable. Far from the dark ages (the mangled bits of his tortured body would be in a shallow grave if it were), the outcry of the public proves that this treatment is not who we are, that this is not alright or O.K. in the modern world.
Furthermore, please don’t pretend that I speak for all Americans, or that any other American speaks for me. You’re right about the answers though. Close analysis always yields answers, and the answers are always more relevant to the conversation than the (mis-spelled) word ‘anilingus’ will ever be. Try again, but before you do please realize that argumentative shock value very quickly wears thin. Eventually you have to say something substantial, or stop talking altogether.

@MrChives
I admire your optimism and presume that it is a reflection of your own experience and as I said above, I am sure things are better – much better but …
“FBI statistics show there were 1,265 hate crimes based on sexual orientation in 2007, up from 1,017 two years earlier and 1,239 in 2003. That compares to 3,820 racially motivated incidents in 2007 and 1,400 in which the victim’s religion was a factor.” [GMANews 24 Dec 2008]
and yes – Matthew Shepherd was a while ago now, but of course Lawrence King wasn’t. The actions of evil people and yes, outrage and disgust is the majority reaction now. We do not need a bloody revolution but there are still many who have the potential to weald power who regard homosexuality as an abomination, and they can revolt just as well as the next man.

Several good points. But, as always, I’m a little hesitant to take stats about ‘hate crimes’ at face value…unfortunately the definition is so amorphous it may not bear close scrutiny. As the definition broadens, there’s naturally going to be more incidents that fall under the widening category. While the crimes themselves are as old as mankind, our classification of them is relatively new. It also might be skewed by the increasing visibility of gays, so it doesn’t necessarily suggest that more people are hateful; just that hateful people have more people to hate. If a little town in Arkansas has ‘no gays’, and then suddenly several kids from an up-and-coming generation come out, we shouldn’t be surprised to see more hate-crimes, but should revel in the new-found freedom they are experiencing. Definitely worth mentioning though, thank you. (If anyone’s offended by my somewhat stereotypical example of Arkansas, I apologize in advance ;) )
I think organized religion will come around eventually. At the end of the day, the church hierarchy’s opinion must reflect that of its patrons, and, as the article demonstrates, that’s where general opinion is heading.

“In parts of the world where the male is still the dominant figure, holds the power and dispenses the justice, women and gays are still oppressed whether it be under the mullahs of Iran or the pastors of the more extreme baptist ministries.”
just a quick note, the ancient greek world was male dominated and pretty much every man there enjoyed boys to a large extent, as far as we know
what they called and equivalent of “gay” was a man who lost his manly qualities and became women-like in temperment, not just because of who he had in his bed
@Bash
“I continue to believe that religion is the central problem here.”
i think you’re a bit right
the problem is the jew
i know, i know, holocaust, bla,bla,bla lots of them died, bla, bla, bla
the repression of sexual behavior, the really big first sexual revolution, starts when rome accepts christ and that religion
jesus was a jew, and the bible (as far as i know) still bears the old testament
and somewhere along there is where it all starts, in leviticus or something of the sort
so yes, i’m blaming it on the jew, yes, i am

Was this child abuse sending a boy to a boot camp and terrorizing him in such a fashion? Traumatic experiences such as these can scar children well into adulthood. Regardless of the child’s sexuality treating a child in such a horrible fashion should be a criminal act. I am sure the brutalisation of children in this manner is against the law in the UK but things are different in the religious US. Time for a change.

Shito, You blame Jews for what you read in your bible, but it was Christians who mis-interpreted what you read. There is no line in the Jewish Holy Scriptures that mentions homosexuality. There is however, a line that says it’s an abomination for a man to be a Temple Prostitute.
about 1 year ago
mslatfly; I’m somewhat confused…
Leviticus (Vayikra) 22:18 “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is abomination.”
That’s from the Jewish Publication Society’s translation…does it only apply to the priests, for whom Leviticus was written?
Obviously shito’s claim is absurd, but I’m still curious. Even then, though, Christians do radically misinterpret their own text, ignoring the words of Christ in favor of the vagaries of Leviticus and the letters of Paul.
about 1 year ago
@mslatfly
as far as i know and if i’m wrong please do correct me!, jewish religion is especially restrictive to what people can or can not do.
amongst other things is leviticus, which is a book with most of it’s prohibitions
now, what i blame on the jews is the sexual repression of the roman empire via-christianism, since cristianity inherits the jewish religion and puts a spin on it after christ, same thing muslims did after mohamed
@MrChives
is it so absurd?
give it a little thought
my claim is that jews brought about the first sexual revolucion, the great sexual repression
which starts happening about when the roman empire embraces christianity
and christianity is a sequel to judaism
this one which is very restrictive in nature
and from then on it comes down hill

MrChives, the problem is interpretation of ancient text. The Jewish Publication Society’s version, while used by Jews form most of the 20th century, is flawed. There are many Hebrew words that have no direct English translation. I don’t remember the Hebrew word off hand. But many modern scholars are now using the phrase “male temple prostitute” for that word, instead of the old “lie with mankind as with womankind.” That word is found in places that talk about the use of male prostitutes at temples around the ancient world (temples of Isis, Inanna, Ishtar, etc). It is not found when talking about any other male on male sex. This includes non-religious texts.
Since you asked, was Leviticus originally meant only for the priestly cast? It has been under debate in the Jewish community for many years. Personally, I think it was probably meant as such. Ask 100 Jews, and you’ll get at least 200 answers.
about 1 year ago
Shito, Yes, there are restrictions to what Jews can do in the Torah. But, it was only ever meant for Jews, and not for any other people. There is a lot of thought in the Jewish community that even that goes too far, and that the restrictions of Leviticus were only meant for Jewish Priests (and the priestly cast).
I do agree with you that Christians repressed the sexual life of the societies that they took over (usually by force). But please do not blame the Jews for that. Jews have never imposed their beliefs on others. We find that much more immoral than anything sexual could ever be.

There’s generally a social logic behind these things that precedes religion (and, indeed, creates it). Greek pederasty, for example, was likely not a result of everyone suddenly being alright with homosexuality. Rather, it resulted from the difference in marriage age between men and women. Men married in their 30’s, girls married around 14. Girls had to remain virgins, or no man would accept them. With men, nobody really cared. So how do you get men to release their sexual drives for 15 years without despoiling another man’s ‘property’ (wives, daughters, servants, sisters, etc.)? Turn them loose on prostitutes or teenage boys. As prostitution was a decidedly short-lived career path, the other option became increasingly attractive. Religion is more a product of culture than a generator.
Homosexuality was pretty much universally condemned through most of the ages of mankind. Your thesis fails to explain why the non-judeo-christian faiths also condemn it. So yeah, its an extraordinarily Eurocentric argument and therefore absurd. Aside from that, the manner in which you present it is incredibly insensitive…

Casa By The Sea was closed down 3 years ago by the Mexican authorities. Several teenage American residents living there complained to their parents of sexual abuse. I happened to be selling real estate in Ensenada at the time the facility was being cleared out. The Police were all over the place. The parents of the teenagers living in Casa By The Sea were frantically trying to get their kids out of there and take them back to the States. The entire facility was closed down, and has never reopened.
