An incredible number of amazing stuff comes from Sweden… magazines, models, sex idols, pedo vampires & zombies, queer kids and The Pirate Bay of course. And the guys behind the latter are working on another gift to the world: IPREDator. Its naming is a none-too-subtle jab at Sweden’s recently-launched IPRED or Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Directive, which allows copyright holders to identify individual file sharers. Therefore IPREDator counters this action by disguising your identity, just like any other virtual private network, although the key difference is that it doesn’t keep any records of your activity. No records means there’s nothing for law firms to go after, which is why it’s appealing to those living outside of Sweden’s new laws.

Not only file sharers will love this but also people who are getting nervous about new repressive laws regarding pictures of teenage boys. The service is currently in closed beta testing and the Pirates were kind enough to give me a beta key so I can tell you a bit more about it.

The sign up is pretty easy: You register an account, pay 149 Swedish Krona (about $ 19) for 3 months of anonymous surfing and you’re ready to go. Setting up the connection to their network is dead simple (they have instructions on their site). Once you’re connected through their service you will have a Swedish IP and can do whatever you want – everyone who tries to find out who you are will just see this IP which you share with thousands of other users and since no connection data are saved at the IPREDator servers no one can tell which user did what.

The speed is surprisingly good: I surf with about 4 Mbit here in Germany and even if I’m used to 32 Mbit with my normal connection that’s still a damn good speed to load some torrents or surf the web. It will be interesting to see if the speed stays at this level once the service opens up to everyone which should happen by the end of this month.

I suppose it’s kinda like tor, except rather than relying on onion-routing, it relies on a single trusted party. Whereas tor could potentially be made up almost entirely of police and still be safe, this relies entirely on TBP being trustable (fair enuff) and never being (technically) compromised (not so sure about that). Then again, this would be much easier for most people to use, and significantly faster than tor.

    The boy’s cute too. ^_^

You might still prefer a VPN with a server based in the U.S., if you want to watch live U.S. TV series or listen to last.fm for free (last.fm is free in the UK or Germany as well).

    • Josh~ Identicon Icon Josh~ SWEDEN says:

Last.fm does work with IPREDator actually (might be an account/cookie-related thing ‘tho since I signed up from Germany) and series can be torrented ^^

The now forced filtering of internet users in Germany is a pain, something us Aussies are still trying to fight.

I really wonder why they are coming down on pics of teens tho, like, the guys in the pictures and many of those looking at them are legal in many countries. Sort of like this whole Sexting will get you child porn charges rubbish.

OMG, Im being too intense lol.

Great idea! -Would also help excluding all the viagra spam e.-mails.

But isn’t there already a company that offers a a service that diguises your ip-address , i think somewhere in the Netherlands or Danmark. Anyone know the one i mean ? – Received an e-mail offer once but lost it :-( .

I’ve been considering paying for this service – do i now have a second choise? – The price seem fair aswell.

As much as I believe in freedom of choice on the internet.. etc, can no one see the downside of this service? Sure the record companies are greedy and deserve this and people should be able to go to websites without filtering and such, but there is a lot of scum on the internet… scum which people should not be able to browse and download without punishment. Videos of raping children and such are disturbing and this service will open a window to people to exploit gaps in technology to watch these despicable acts and supply will match demand… that aside, I would feel hell of alot safer knowing that Fox and friends aren’t going to come after me for downloading Angels and Demons haha

    • Taras Identicon Icon Taras says:

Yeah there is some scum out there. And before the internet, you could buy child porn through the mail with far less worry than you can download it on the internet today. And you could buy it from under the counter at porn shops too. No problem. But people have a right to privacy. People have a right to freedom of speech and freedom of the press. If you take away everything that is good and decent in the world just because there are some bad people, then it’s *ALL* bad. Like China and Iran. Living like they do is worse than having a smidget of child porn amidst all of the good stuff. Far worse.

There is a huge scam going on. People are being lef to believe that there is some kind of epidemic, that things are getting bad. NOT SO! In the U.S., the rape rate has declined by 83% since 1973, and child sexual abuse has declined by over 50% since 1994. THAT’S MORE THAN HALF!

["Child sexual abuse cases nationwide declined 5 percent from 2005 to 2006, capping a 14-year decline of more than 50 percent, according to an analysis of new data released by the Crimes against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire".]

      http://www.forensicnursemag.com/hotnews/child-sexual-abuse-rates-down.html

Children are far safer than they have ever been.

As for the Pirate Bay VPN. Are you kidding? I wouldn’t touch that with a 10 foot pole. Maybe Metropipe or Perfect Privacy. But Xerobank is light years above the rest.

relakks is actually British and bot of them are not as anonymous as IPREDator.

      • m3ntal Identicon Icon m3ntal UNITED KINGDOM says:

Do you have any evidence to backup that statement? – i thought relakks was ment to be fairly secure/anonymous
… i also thought it was swedish too :s

        • Josh~ Identicon Icon Josh~ SWEDEN says:

You’re right, they’re Swedish. When I looked them up a year ago they had servers in the UK but seems like they have moved them.

As for logging: Sweden requires ISP’s to keep connections logs. On the Relakks site they clearly tell you they will hand over your traffic data to the authorities if they “prove beyond reasonable doubt that they have a case for demanding subscription information from RELAKKS”.

I’m in Sweden, my little flag is for real! I used to buy music online (seriously, I did!) but after IPRED I’ve stopped. Basically the record companies has told me to fuck off, and now I refuse to buy ONE single item from them. Whatever music I need, I now snitch it for free… without the risks of anyone trying to get me. It takes a little tweaking but it’s totally worth it. Just as Jake I’m afraid IPREDator will attract scums as well, and I bet there’s just a matter of time before there’ll be legal actions taken against internet anonymity. I hope I’m wrong though.

    • Josh~ Identicon Icon Josh~ GERMANY says:

The last time I bought music from a big record company was when I was about 10 and didn’t know better. Nowadays I buy only music from bands who don’t have a label at all or are signed at a label that doesn’t treat its customers like criminals. This applies to most bands and labels in the gothic/industrial/pagan-folk scene ‘tho so I do buy a lot of music actually :)

As for the “scum” thing: There will be no difference compared to what we have today. Most people who share such things were doing that in private for years now, it’s not like they’re safe from now on, they always were safe since there were ways to do what they do before IPREDator. But it’s not like there is a commercial market for rape tapes or something, that’s a myth governments use to justify internet censorship which they actually want to use to keep people from sharing music and films.

Why the heck should I use a swedish IP address? The very single only time I saw a (swedish) CP-stop-sign was when I got a swedish tor exit node while I tried to access 12chan — clicked in tor on “get new identity” and continued surfing with another IP address.

You get 32Mbs in germany? Is that typical or do you have a business class account? I know the US is WAAAAAY behind the rest of the world for consumer speeds (I get 8Mbs). How much (in USD) do you pay for that 32Mbs?

I’m so jealous– I can’t get anything higher than 8Mbs in my home. Ive tried hetting the 16Mbs business class but they wont put it in a residence.

    Steve

    • Josh~ Identicon Icon Josh~ GERMANY says:

That’s the normal speed with Cable for € 22 per month (phone and internet flatrate included). They can switch to 300 Mbs any time, they just don’t see a need to do so yet ’cause DSL is still way slower :(

Apropos: At night when less people are online IPREDator got as fast as 8 Mbit (1 MB/sec) for me :)
