“Miracles happen: Same-sex partners of police officers to get survivor benefits”
It’s a bigger (and slightly older) miracle than you think.
Under UK civil partnership and equality legislation (the kind of thing Tony Blair used to organise before he went mad, married George W Bush and illegally invaded Iraq), any “surviving civil partner” (the UK gay-marriage equivalent of a widow/er) is guaranteed exactly the same rights as a str8 widow/er.
For example … to my great amusement … the Church of England, now resolutely homophobic (it was much more liberal in the past) will be required to pay “widows’ pensions” to surviving gay partners for many years to come, for past service by its thousands of gay clergy in the years before it began driving them all out. Blegh!
The police service news is about new rights for *unmarried* partners, spun by the reporter into a non-existant gay shock story.
“A map of nations that don’t use the metric system.”
Sorry. Add Britain. The heights and weights of people (five foot six and eight stone four … yum yum), birth weights, pints of milk and beer, and measures of distance from inches to feet to yards to miles, remain doggedly non-metric. Pounds and ounces refuse to die as well. Car fuel consumption is still miles per gallon, though petrol has been sold in litres for years and our gallons and pints are different from the americans - who don’t use stones either, just to add to the fun. Exccentric to the last. All our schools and sciences are metric … but primary schools have started teaching imperial alongside, because it’s still out there in the culture, refusing to go away.

Having been brought up without learning the metric system (I am very old), it is always frustrating trying to figure out cock sizes on non-USA web sites. Is 190cm huge or just average?
September 4th, 2008 at 03:48
Oh, Alan. I do believe 190cm is quite a massive size. 10cm is above average.
September 6th, 2008 at 07:00
10cm is a bit on the small side (3.9inches). 12.7-15.2 is much closer to average (5-6inches). 190 is quite large (6ft)… maybe 190mm (7.5inches)?
September 6th, 2008 at 16:19
Okay, so 190cm is 6ft. Maybe the Dick they were talking about is Cheney, he is a massive dick.

BritAnon seems to be saying that the police’s apparent gay-friendliness is far from miraculous, and that they are simply bowing down (unwillingly, perhaps?) under the weight of equal opportunity legislation. Of course, many police officers and the forces they work in do conform to the stereotype: they are profoundly old-fashioned in their attitudes and behaviour, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
Earlier this millennium, when Banksy stencilled his kissing policemen on a wall near Brighton station, it was a deeply ironic and shocking image: Surely They Don’t Do That! And Even If They Did, Never In Public! But since then, since 2004, I think, the Gay Police Association have proudly marched in uniform in the Brighton Pride Parade; in 2006, the contingent was even led by the (straight) Chief Constable of Sussex, in defiance of protests by a minority of so-called Christian officers who disapproved of bum sex. Miracles happen every day, and we should be grateful for them.
PS, police cock sizes are measured in feet, not inches or cm :-O====8
