According to the Wiki on Matthew Shepard he was beaten and raped on a high school trip to Morocco. The American hate crimes bill would not have had any bearing on that. I have very mixed feelings about trying to legislate morality of any kind. It would be nice to think we could legislate or socially engineer all the bad things out of our lives, but that approach has been a dismal failure. The state, in particular America and England, have been among the worst violators of abusing people’s birthrights and integrity in all of human history. I seriously doubt this law will change anything. But if it makes you feel better in some way, then I’ll drink to that, but that alone.

Umm… the wikipedia article has a large heading on the murder, which happened a few years after the trip to Morocco. The torture and murder happened in the midwest, so it would be covered by the hate crimes bill.

Their intentions may be sinister, but I still have to approve of the fact that the Catholic Church is drawing a distinction between pedophiles and ephebophiles.

Nice to see you’re putting the positive stories at the top of the list Josh. U.S. legislature and U.K. government both doing useful things, who would’ve expected that! Not to mention the Catholic Church taking inspiration on word use from milkboys. Maybe they’re fans………

I like your comments and especially your humor regarding the Catholic Church. I’d like to think the world is waking up. I agree with you. The U.S legislature and the U.K. government are both doing some useful things. As an old who grew up during the 50’s and 60’s and locked away in the closet my entire life, it is really fun to see young kids today having more freedom to love who they want. They owe a lot to the likes of Matthew and his family.

@Bruce Tharp, if you grew up in the US or the UK during the 50s and 60s and weren’t having more sex than you have today, then you willfully put yourself in your own closet prison. Kids then in both the US and UK had far more sex with each other and with older dudes than they would ever think of today. It was called “fooling around” and had carried almost no sexual identification so it was rampant.
And this was true in the cities and in rural areas as well. Some of the biggest orgies I had during my childhood were in the hay lofts of barns in rural areas. And in any city there were always lots of places to go to hang around and get connected with some horny guy.
If you missed all this Bruce, then it is your own damn fault. Don’t look to the law hoping to provide some sane sexual outlet for you or anyone else. The pagan era is over. Get used to social engineering which will protect a few sacred cows and demonize almost everything else. It would take a revolution to bring real change.

People often generalise from their own experience. You got a lot of sex, doesn’t mean everyone else did. And now, some kids are getting plenty of sex, probably much the same as you used to. But some kids are still very closeted. There was no pagan era, nothing changes.

Hate Crime Bills – the thought police of WW2 Japan comes to mind.
Gay Handholding and Marriage – vox populi
RCC – whatever
Pepsi Boycott – uhm, I buy whatever’s on sale. No preference. I’m bi-Cola.
France and Poland – I don’t care what they do to sexual criminals. But it is time ti change a lot of laws.
US Telco and Canadian Wiretapping – as long as there’s bad guys who don’t play by the rules, we must fight fire with fire.
G20 – these protests are always violent and destructive. They are always riots, not protests, and anyone even remotely involved in their organization or promotion should be suspect. Break one of my windows, and you might get yourself shot. And I don’t like “protesters” tying up traffic or closing streets i might want to drive on.

@Hate Crime Bills – I think of innocent people being raped and murdered because of their sexuality. I don’t know where you get the idea of thought police from.
@US Telco – Fighting fire with fire just makes more fire. You’re supposed to use water. Or foam. Besides, who’s to say WE play by the rules with OUR fire?

I take it Pieman that where you live there are no laws against rape and murder? Is that why you support a Hate Crime Bill? Look dude, if people ignore the laws against murder, do you think they will pay any attention to Hate Crime laws? ROFL
about 5 months ago
Hate crimes are generally thought crimes.
How does the hatred towards a particular type of person make the actual crime worse? I’m gay, so I assume raping and murdering another gay man would be just another rape and murder? How is it worse for the dead person if they were raped and murdered by a gay-hating straight?

@France and Poland – I don’t care what they do to sexual criminals. But it is time ti change a lot of laws.
At one time, gays would have been sexual criminals. In Poland, gays still have some way to go to get toleration, never mind equality. As for castration… In England, Turing underwent something that was along the lines of chemical castration…

Well, as it seems they stand their ground pretty well so far and don’t let the CDU swallow them up as easily as the last time. Yet.
Sometimes I am a bit worried when reading josh’s headlines, since they often way more biased than the links itself would justify and rather propaganda than news. Also Josh left out every bad news for the left party and the pirates, though there were many, some of them way more serious than the current ones trying to find a hair in the coalition soup.
For example there is a reason the SPD can have a red-red coalition in the east, but it would be idiotic to do the same in the west – simply because the left party in the west is a huge pile of different opinions variing between rather liberal socialism and hardcore stalinism which would make Schäuble look like an orphan when it comes to restrictions.
Well, at least Josh’s in the schizophrenic situation to support the Pirates as well as the Left party, so maybe the idea of unlimited freedom of information combined with the idea of restrictions makes an intresting mix, though I am afraid that this result would look a lot like the SPD.

@Catholic Church blames gays for child abuse, says there are no pedos in church
Church says “if you fiddle with adolescent boys, you’re gay”
Gays say “if you fiddle with adolescent boys, you’re not gay, you’re a pedo”
The gays won’t invite those of us who like teenagers into their club, so we won’t get into it just cos the catholic church is trying to push us into it :P

Sorry for posting in german, but i refer to a part of the original post written in german anyway.

In this case I support that statement from some Church spokesman as it is a slap into the face of those self-satisfied and spineless gay-organisations, who want to tell the world how great “gay culture” always was by doing their usual name-dropping (blablabla Leonardo da Vinci blablabla), but at the same time shout “they are not us!”, when asked if men attracted to adolescents would be gay, too.

On government surveillance of communications and the relationship between US telecom firms and the US government: Setec Astronomy was a fictional “black box” retrieved by white hat hackers in the film “Sneakers” (1992 – River Phoenix played the youngest hacker). Note – “Setec Astronomy” is an anagram that sorts out to “too many secrets”. Rather a prescient notion…
