No Hugs Today
Does anyone really wonder why our kids are having an unhealthy attitude about their bodies and sex? We teach our children “Good Touch/Bad Touch.” Now preteens in Milford, Connecticut are learning “No Touch.” Local news there reported this weekend that parents at the East Shore Middle School received a letter from Principal Catherine Williams, which said that any touching at all on school grounds — including “hugging” and “horseplay” — could result in “parent conferences, detention, suspension and/or a request for expulsion from school.” Students have said that they have even been prohibited from “high fiving” classmates in the halls. I wonder if American conservatives realise how much they have in common with radical muslims…
cool clip!

Well you think again about saying American conservatives. This is more of a problem about having to much political correctness which is rampant over here.

Touching is politicaly incorrect?
Are we offending the non-touchers?:p

Hey, I live in Milford!!! There are a lot of hot boys around here who boog-a-loo. Most of the time these morality campaigns have the exact reverse effect of what had been originally intended. It’s called the law of unintended consequences.
Have you ever noticed that the hottest sex among boys takes place in those societies that are the most sexually repressed? Now, don’t misunderstand me. I happen to support sexual freedom for all people of all places and of all ages. And that pisses a lot of people off too!
“Offense is always provided for those who will take same. There is no reason for ‘nice’ people to like me at all.”

We have this same rule at my school which started from too many people holding hands. They say that it is an “educational institution and it is not somewhere for you and your partner to engage in private acts”. Now I have to hold hands with my partner in the privacy of a toilet or in my own time haha

I did the free hugs thing once in the central shopping district of Brisbane with 2 female friends of mine. We did get some genuine people who needed a hug, we had this one guy and his girlfriend follow us across the road into a music store we went into just to get a hug which was sweet, but then we got harassed by a group of scenester hardcore kids who tackled me to the ground and abused the free hug privilege and broke our signs so we gave up. Someone always has to ruin the love.

I heard the school originally wanted to resort to full body condoms for all students, but the Pope objected.

And let’s not talk about the fact that my own son’s own grammar school has banned the word “dice,” lest simply hearing that word encourage kids to take up a life of gambling. The term they have to use now is “number cube.”

Yeah, schools get a little psychotic sometimes, especially with touching. Not sure how many schools have policies like this, but for the schools I went to, you could get in trouble for making out. The only problem is that you would see straight kids shoving their tongues so far down their partners’ throats that they might actually be cleaning their stomachs , while some gay kids reported getting in trouble for minor offenses.

The free hugs campaign is deeply creepy.

Hmmm, this doesn’t surprise me at all, especially considering it’s Connecticut, one of the most tight-ass, conservative states I’ve ever lived in. Also, Connecticut:The Contradiction State. Gay Marriage was legalized (yay!) yet here we have uptight, ultra-conservative morals of some sort apparently attempting to put forth a No Touch rule in this one school…unreal. Hope it doesn’t spread any further than East Shore Middle School.

Sorry, should have stated “same-sex” marriage instead of “gay”. One track mind, I guess.

Our species has a specialized organ called “skin”. It covers our entire bodies. It has one main purpose: to receive touch. Touch and be touched. Caress and be caressed.

A natural progression in the campaign to destroy human sexuality.

I find it so sad that people are being taught not to touch and not to feel. Emotion is the best thing in the world in my opinion and teaching others to ignore it is ridiculous and horrible. They could grow up sad, sad people who are awkward and fail to fall in love.

Same thing in my school. No “PDA” (Public Display of Affection) ever, especially when the act is between the same sex. Punishable with detention and demerits. Everything but high fives, I’d say. Holding hands, hugging, kissing, etc. Oh and if it were kissing between the same sex its expulsion (it happened), however, it is not the same for opposite sex kissing.

They banned high fives here 10 years ago when I was in middle school. (Atlanta GA)

it is unfortunate that when people over-worry about children’s safety, the solution (cause they basically don’t trust children with having any intelligence) is to control and limit the life of the child..so THE ADULTS won’t have to worry.

Kinda reminds me of the “special pills” everyone gets to take in The Giver :)

I love that video. Each time I watch it I get happy. I feel like hugging someone atm. I wish they had one of those things around here, a lot of people where I live could use a hug.

pda sucks! it’s like saying “i have love and you don’t, losers!” as a person that gets jealous easily, though, i am biased.

I agree with you for the most part, but I think it’s to teach kids about the “bad touch” that you so aptly quoted. You know, things like sexual harassment.

I have been ranting and raving for some time now about the stupid cultural values that created the “good touch, bad touch” standard. This school has added “zero tolerance”, another misguided standard, to the mix. We perpetuate an awesome cruelty upon ourselves, the belief that sex and nudity are nasty. This causes so much pain and embarrassment which serve no useful purpose. This is a huge topic. I will post some rants if anyone cares to ask.
