“He needs a haircut”

So Josh…. you’re setting up a scenario where one is allowed to state a preference for long hair but if one makes it clear that they prefer the opposite, they’re told “fuck off my pond”? I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you don’t mean to extend it quite that far, but that’s the end result. I run into this all the time – people try to delegitimize the preferences of others by lying and putting them into a false category (e.g. backward, bigoted, unenlightened, etc.) while reserving their right to blatantly state their own preferences whenever they want. If you want another example of this, think of the cut/uncut issue. You’ll hear some people constantly inject how they prefer uncut. But let someone state that they don’t like uncut, and the reaction is likely to be personal trashing with the insinuation that your preferences are less legitimate or even ignorant, bad or wrong. These are nothing more than disguised tactics designed to elevate elevate one’s own personal preference while trying to discredit others. Personal preferences of this sort should be seen as equal.

If that’s too wordy, the short version is that some of us don’t like being told to fuck off simply because we’ve stated a preference.
