Coming Out in Middle School

Austin didn’t know what to wear to his first gay dance last spring. It was bad enough that the gangly 13-year-old from Sand Springs, Okla., had to go without his boyfriend at the time, a 14-year-old star athlete at another middle school, but there were also laundry issues. “I don’t have any clean clothes!” he More >

How powerful…

Very poignant. What right does a government who sends thousands to their deaths in a pointless war, have to make judgements on how others should live their lives?
The really sickening thing is I bet it was considered a dishonourable discharge and they took away the guys pension as well.

The soldier’s name was Leonard Matlovich. He had the courage to challenge the system long before it became common. Read about him here–

And let us not forget Sgt. Miriam Ben Shalom who fought the government at about the same time as Matlovich…after an incredible career of government/military service in the Wisconsin National Guard, the government compared her to Nazi’s in open court. Shame on our military leaders for continuing this deceitful hatred of gays and lesbians.

As a gay vet, I am proud to salute TSgt Matlovich.

For those interested in more information on the history of gay servicemembers in the US, I’m certain that Randy Shilt’s book CONDUCT UNBECOMING is still the undisputed choice. While this is a huge book, representing years of painstaking research, it is NOT written like a snobby post-graduate doctoral thesis. Containing thousands of personal interviews of gay servicemembers and former servicemembers, as well as others at the periphery and even those in opposition, the book is surprisingly easy to read. I recommend it to anyone at the highschool level or beyond. Since it’s been around a while, used paperback copies should be available for under US$10.
